His
son, George Hartzell, became interested in his father's business
and much of his time was spent in the wagon factory. About 1890,
George joined his father in a partnership and the firm became known
as John T. Hartzell & Son, manufacturers of lumber and farm
wagons.
In 1900,
because of his father's illness, George Hartzell borrowed $25,000
and bought out his father's interest. It was a bold move for a
young man of 25.
